Bride Of Chucky
Reviewed by: Angus Wolfe Murray
Ten years ago when Chucky first appeared in Child's Play, he was an interesting new arrival at The Nutters Ball, hosted by Jason, Freddy and Michael Myers. A murderous doll, who speaks like New Jersey trailer trash, is not something easily ignored.
Bride is the third incarnation of this nursery serial killer. Now that the boys in the back room can do anything, effects-wise, a toy stabbing a grown man to death is, er, baby stuff.
What about sexual intercourse between consenting dolls? ("Have I got a rubber?" Chucky retorts. "I'm ALL rubber"). No problemo!
The bride is Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly), a psycho hooker. After Chucky electrocutes her in a bubble bath, her soul enters a wedding Barbie and suddenly it's Bonnie and Clyde for tots, except the victims are adult and speak in sentences.
The script was thrown out of Sickville and now resides in a multiplex near you. The early chillers had a claustrophobic edge to them. Chucky was more like one of Sid's creations from Toy Story, not a dwarf with guns who terrorises the neighbourhood. It seems that indulgence is built into sequels.
If Chucky can kill, why not bump off half the cast? Eh? Hannibal Lecter didn't eat the crew in The Silence Of The Lambs. Enough, already!
